Little did I know that when I made these images in Salvador, Brasil in 1984 that they would survive all these years, in a box, and maybe be even more relevant today then they were when I clicked the shutter back then. I was young and naive and most of the work I did, as always, was accidental and simple minded. I travelled to Brazil with Aaron Siskind and Charlie Traub. I was Aaron's assistant. Which meant I carried his stuff (his cameras and tripod) for him and made sure things were in focus, and that we went to the same place to eat everyday, the restaurant he liked, shrimp mostly. I was allowed my few moments of distraction, and down in the heart of the city, by the water, I discovered this community of people who loved being photographed. So I complied. I had no idea that one day I would look back on them, the pictures and the people, and be amazed how how they fit in to our current world. I don't know any of their names so I just numbered the images...the people I photographed were all really nice and we had a good time! Some are in color and a few are in black and white...they feel so different...
